Interview
Luis Guerrero
Art in NY
Final Project
I interviewed an artist that I know who’s name is Doris Alvarado. She is from Puerto Rico and was a teacher. Doris, even though, does not have time to paint or draw, loved to paint throughout her whole life. Doris is now 56 years old and studied in the University of Puerto Rico. She use to follow a famous artist named Bob Ross. She use to study a lot of his techniques and has many portraits of his paintings when she use to follow him. I asked her how did she become interested in art, and she told me that it was something that came natural to her. She said people are born with a certain talent or talents that they are good in, so art, along with singing were the talents that she was able to be naturally good at. Doris views art as something that anyone can be free with. Painting was something she always loved to do, and use to take out a lot of time doing so. Another reason why she loves it is that she believes it is a form of therapy to the person who is doing the art. Being able to do good art takes an open mind, creativity and a lot of patience so that whatever the artist wants to accomplish, comes out well done. When Doris use to paint, she use to use a lot of oil paints on large canvases. She only has a very limited amount here in NY. The rest of her paintings are in a relative’s house in her native country in Puerto Rico. Doris wishes she had enough time to paint but due to her age and at the moment, she barely has time to do some art. I was very interested in all she had told me about her philosophy on art and how her surroundings are very inspirational to her and to many other artist. I was pleased to interview her because even though I know her, this is something people don’t know much about.

9-11 memorial
Luis Guerrero
Art in NY
On November 25, my Art in NY class went to see the 9/11 memorial. At the site there is construction going on around the memorial and in the memorial, there are two big pools made in a specific way. Each pool was placed where a tower was located and they both had water falling down. The pool is in a square like the tower was and it sinks down into two levels. The water begins to fall from the top and lands on a surface but then on that surface is another square in the middle in which the water goes into so the water is constantly falling.
The water falling kind of gives the person who comes to the memorial some kind of peace by drowning out some noises around the city. When you look at the water, it causes everyone to enter a thought that they may have not been thinking about. The sound of the water fall allows the person to open their mind and think about what comes to mind, and since the pools represents the towers, all you think about is how that day was if you could remember. It also seems that the water causes you to think but to burry all the thoughts that were traumatizing from that day of 9/11. Especially people who lost someone on that day, they probably want those horrible moments to be taken by the water so that they can feel peace once again.
The names of everyone who lost their lives are very emotional when you read them. As a person who didn’t lose anyone on that day, and did not know any of the names, just by reading the names, their families come to your mind, and you wonder how much they suffered and how much they went through because of this lost. Going from one pool that had the first responders names, you feel sadness in your heart but then you feel comfort that people devote their lives to saving people and sometimes it causes them to lose their own for the price of others. Observing their names and from what engine/ fire house they were from, for example, it comes to mind that this person and every other name on the side of this pool was a hero and will never be forgotten in history. All the names from the pool show that tomorrow is a different day, not knowing what will happen, but we should enjoy every moment of life. The names of everyone that was lost went to work on 9/11 with not even a clue that they were going to lose their lives, but it happened.
The memorial brings us together with our families, friends, and neighbors physically and mentally. The things in life that are good or bad can’t be taken for granted. People complain about their life, but all the names on those pools would have loved to take your place and still be on this planet with their families and loved ones. The 9/11 memorial has a powerful way of making those who come to see it to reflect on what happened that day and reflect on our situations in life. It reminds us how grateful we should be for having our lives, and for having first responders who are willing to give their lives if a tragedy was to happen.

Egg painting
This egg painting appears brighter than it should be due to the lighting of the camera. I tried my best to mix the black and white and tried to show where the light hit the egg the most. The three eggs are on a small plate and sitting on a flat surface. It was difficult, and took me a few hours to try to give the eggs some shape and make the plate aroud it.

Assignment 2
When I saw this canvas, it took my attention from a distance. It made me move to it quicker just how
the squares look. I exammined it and looked at the squares as if they were people in life. Aiming for one personal goal but only a few make it. The squares fade but then appear again as if someone has failed but
decided to get back up and aim for that goal again until he/she acheived their goal.
I tried my best, I couldn't seem to get the right colors in the middle.

Exhibit
In this photo, I see through the person who looks like the American flag that he represents everyone in America. The person who is black, I feel represents all the lives that were lost at 9-11. Even though those people died, the person that looks like the flag is holding the person from falling or better said, being forgotten. This has made america stonger and those lives will never be forgotten, America will never let them go.
